What is Memory Care?

If you are caring for a loved one or individual with Alzheimer’s or dementia, you understand the significance of providing a safe, secure and structured environment for them. At some point their level of care may be greater than what you can provide at home. When that time comes, a Memory Care community is an option you may consider for your loved one.

But what is Memory Care and how is different? Memory Care refers to a long-term care with supportive services specifically designed for seniors living with Alzheimer’s, dementia, or other memory conditions. In the Memory Care setting, residents enjoy specialized services and programming specifically tailored to their needs and interests. Residents can participate in group activities designed to stimulate memory and boost cognitive abilities like music therapy, live concerts, exercise, arts and crafts and various social events planned through the calendar month. The caregivers in Memory Care are specifically trained on proper Alzheimer's and dementia techniques and are staffed 24 hours a day with Resident Assistants and Registered Nurses to provide assistance at any time.

Memory Care is optimized for safety as it is located in a secured part of the community. However, they are also designed to be navigated easily, home-like and very comfortable for residents. For example, Prairie Ridge uses soft, neutral wall colors with simplistic decor to create an environment of calmness. The community also includes a shadowbox located at the front entrance of each apartment suite so residents can easily identify their spaces with their name and personal pictures. It is recommended each resident with the help of their family member, decorate the apartments with photos and familiar belongings, so the resident feels at home and comfortable.

The resident is not the only one who will benefit from a Memory Care, but the family caregivers will too. Instead of constant worry and providing daily care services, the family can now have peace of mind and spend more quality time with their loved one by embracing each moment. As you can see, Memory Care does truly help improve quality of life for residents and their family members.
